John G. Esposito, Editor               SPRING 2008

A MESSAGE FROM THE LEFT SEAT:
18 May 2008 was the 40th anniversary of the Memorial Garden at NAS Brunswick. It was celebrated with a rededication ceremony at the station chapel attended by about 200 people.  The commemorative address was given by Admiral Gregory Johnson, USN (Ret), the Friendship Garden was rededicated by Master Chief Bill Waite, USN (Ret), and the Memorial Garden was rededicated by Commander Peter Garvin, USN, commanding officer of VP-8 (have you noticed how young commanders are now a days?).  Admiral Johnson's address centered on the fact that in 1968, at a time when it wasn't safe in many parts of the country for a serviceman to wear his uniform in public, there were civilians in the Brunswick area who recognized the sacrifices made by our Navy personnel and honored them with a beautiful memorial garden on the air station, the only one on any military reservation in the U.S. that's totally supported by a civilian garden club. He noted that the Harpswell Garden Club has committed to maintaining the gardens even after NASB closes in 2011. Many of you will remember our 1999 reunion when the VPB-111/VP-21 squadron plaque was added to the garden. I used the occasion of the rededication service to pay homage to our shipmates who have passed on. May they rest in peace.
One of our squadron members, Jerry Owens (63-65), recently sent me some squadron duty officer logbooks from the 1961-1962 era. He's generously contributing them to our museum (we won't ask how he acquired them). Which brings up a suggestion, if any of you have any squadron artifacts in your possession, how about considering adding them to the squadron's collection.  Not if you're really using them, but if they've been packed in a box in the cellar for the past 40 years, maybe you'll consider parting with them.
Have a great Navy summer and we'll see you in Branson next spring.
Bill

A MESSAGE FROM THE WEBMASTER:
Since the last newsletter and my call for biographies and photos, I have received a 1963 Med-cruise book from Manfred "Moosejaw" Lenz. Thanks Moosejaw! Unfortunately, I've been unable to scan and publish it to our website due to time, and several lightening related thunderstorms which have wreaked havoc with my computer system. Also, it is possible I've lost emails sent to me in the last three weeks (Last half of May and first part of June), so if you've sent anything to me during that period, would you please resend? I believe my system is now up to par, and I will scan and publish Moosejaw's Med-cruise book soon.
I am still interested in receiving biographies particularly. Biographies are the most important part of the squadron website because they supply both the brick and mortar of its foundation. My thanks again to all of you who have taken the time and effort to send me your bios. Unsurprisingly, the Biography pages are the most read section of our website. Please send me yours!
Also, for those of you with already published bios, you may add to, or edit your present biography. After all, some of these bios are many years old, and many of us have lived to extend those biographies, so an UPDATE may well be in order. Just email or send me your changes/ additions.
My best wishes to all for a pleasant summer, and my hopes in seeing as many of you as possible at the reunion in Branson next year.

Keep 'er trimmed & level,

TAPS:
It is with deep regret that I make mention of the passing of James H. Adcock, AD3, 50-53, deceased 12/2007.

May he rest in peace.

FROM THE RADIO COMPARTMENT:
I had many returns of the newsletter bearing the notation “Temporarily Away”.  I guess this means vacations or many of you have a summer address and a winter address.  It would be a great help if those who have dual addresses would let me know what they are and when you are in residence at each.

Thank you in advance
